Waiting for the wind

Short surfing sesh while waiting for the wind to come.

Wondering; should I stay or should I go? Grey skies, with drizzle forecasted, waist to head high dribblers making their way westward  and the water temp has edged down a degree below average. April has arrived it may be grey and cold but the days are dragging out and the water should start warming up soon. All things to look forward to.
Breezy off shores today. Some good waves coming through from time to time but not consistent. An interesting week ahead. Several lows lining up the isobars out to the west which will start to deliver some longer period swell from later today. The hope is the wind will ease back during the day and give us some clean lines before dark.

Paddle back out
Hope everyone caught some fun surf today . Going through the oodles of pix from today's session  I am always amazed at the cool pictures the Go Pro seems to get . Its always cool to see shots of yourself and friends surfing , but I'm always stoked to see all the odd underwater and trippy color / prism shots. It reminds me of how much I take for granted being out in the ocean and all the cool stuff we get to see

Here's a couple from this mornings fun session at Portinfer

Sailing, Diving, and Surfing all in the last few weeks... Happy days and they keep coming. Each night I go to bed thinking I'm too tired to surf tomorrow my limbs ache, I can't think straight and my wife keeps saying I'm acting weird... I'm not acting weird I'm just too knackered to answer back I have 'winter surf brain' the cold draws more energy and my brain cells aren't getting fuelled. Even writing this is like some kind of mission.

Abyss

Diving session off to a slow start.

Guernsey can be blessed, some of the time, with sunny warm weather. Lately, I feel like the weather has a vendetta against outdoor loving weekend warriors. Sunny and warm on the weekdays when people are stuck indoors at work, cold and wet on the weekend throwing a wet sponge on plans. I once tried to strike a deal with Mother Nature and asked for rainy weekdays and dry sunny weekends. In exchange, I would plant a tree. That deal was not accepted. Since we have had many weekends with rough water conditions at sea,
Today started of as normal  some fair or sunny periods at first, otherwise rather cloudy with scattered showers. Southwest F4-5 with a crappy weather forecast for the weekend.  So much for weather reports. By 4 o'clock the wind had dropped off to nothing the sun started to shine so a spot of diving was in order out of town.

I WENT SCALLOPING!

Who can forget those scenes from the movie The Abyss featuring glowing beings that eventually saved the lives of everyone on the deep sea rig? If you’re a diver, those scenes have probably stuck with you, perhaps even inspiring hope that one day you’ll make such a discovery. Well, far be it from me to burst your bubble, but I only found more scallops in the Abyss out on the east coast tonight, maybe next time...

Same shots different angle

D'oh forgot to throw this up on here. Busy week
I just got sent some windsurfing pic's from last Wednesday's session.

One of the colder days of the year!
Not much excitement to speak of but good to get out there
PULL THE TRIGGER.
And hold ON!!
over the handle bars

Table top off a knee high wave.
Got high enough to fully unwind on the way down and land slightly nose first.
Shows what a bit of power and a steep bit of chop can do

These next four shots are of the same move. One taken from the shore by E-Motion Media and the other from my Gopro which you can see hanging on for grim death half way up my mast.

Fun onshore mush

Believe it or not, summer time is officially here
British Summer Time began officially from 1am Sunday morning as clocks went forward by an hour.
It IS NOT BRITISH SUMMERTIME!! it is bloody freezing.

Hoofed it down to the beach for an after work session and I didn't expect much...

East winds in our island today. The East wind in combination with temperatures just above zero made it a very cold day.
Wind chill made it feel raw.
Face freezing off.
But there are a few waves that provide a momentary thrill.

BUT I just wanted a workout!!

Forecast gave 2.2 meters, but it wasn't as windy as predicted so I didn't expect more than waist high waves. The decision was to leave it late and try and score an early evening session when the wind was supposed to pick up. Trundled to Pembroke to catch the mid tide sweet spot. It seemed windy but everyone was saying 5.3 was the way to go -So I pulled on my wetsuit, told my big wind sail it could have a rest day and grabbed my 5.3 on the 74 single. The swell looked messy and onshore so I took my time rigging not looking forward to the cold water that awaited us.  Once I was suited up we were all out there making the most of the mush burger. Most of the ingredients were there today with some good mushy ramps and plenty wind to let loose. Shame it was onshore. Some good performances amongst the crew out today. I had an average session sailing up and down picking off some rolling mush to carve off.
A Fun time.
Rode till the tank was empty.

 Rotating a forward .

It all ended up in a tragic sess for Matt he managed to snap his 76L board trying backloops which was pretty impressive!!!

So, you're asking yourself, how do I repair my board!
Wavesailing places huge demands on equipment;
even small waves can create sufficient hydraulic pressure to snap a board.

Went for the first backie and hammered it into the water
could not believe how close to landing.

Icy swim
I am that fool, and I'm not alone – I'm one of many winter sailors

Got some nice frontside hits
